It’s coming on to two years now living in New York City and I think I’m finally starting to feel like I’m attached. Like I have a real sense of belonging here.

Not to get too deep right now… Here is a video of Akilah (enchanted-dystopia) and I doing Fancy at Karaoke.

Last night was the best.

Hi Akila, I want to start off by saying I LOVE your channel. I find your videos hilarious! However, I was a little bit disheartened by your last "simple natural hair routine" video. I totes understood why you said you didn't want to do haircare videos, as they aren't what you're interested in (even though I was desperate for help as a natural girl with no clue ) but was disappointed that you did a sponsored one :( is there any chance of you doing a GENUINE on with the products you really use??

Hey! So I am very flattered that you like my channel and my content. Comedy is my main focus, and there are loads of sketches/funny videos/vlogs coming up.

That said, I did a sponsored video because if I have to do a video talking about my hair, I think I should be paid to do so. I did actually use the products I mentioned, and I chose those specifically out of a line of like 30+. The deep conditioner has replaced my Herbal Essences routine, and I genuinely like the way the mousse holds for a wash n’ go look.

I thought (and still think) that there’s nothing wrong with doing sponsored content as long as you are up front about it. You’d be amazed how many natural hair girls do videos that are sponsored without mentioning it in the video or video name, but bury it in the description or withhold that information altogether. Making videos is work. And to be completely honest, YouTube itself really doesn’t pay that much unless you’re either daily vlogging, have millions of subscribers, or are putting out high quality content weekly. It comes in waves. I think it’s good for people who are essentially working a second job for minimal income to get sponsored to do stuff from time to time, and my goal is to not make it a majority of my content. In fact, in September I have a sponsored series coming out on my channel, and because there are 6 episodes I’m planning on doing 8 other videos just to give everyone a little breathing room.

I get it, you’re young, you don’t want to be sold on stuff, but I think anyone would accept payment for a mention if the opportunity arose.
